Faith Over Fear
RON HAMILTON, CCCC CONFERENCE MINISTER
The Scripture speaks very clearly about believing people living a life of confidence—free of fear. The Psalmist speaks boldly about this matter.
The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked advance against me to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
Psalm 27:1-3
The Gospels share how Jesus repeatedly said, “Do not be afraid…” John tells us that the presence of God’s love and grace conquers fear.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18)
Sadly, many people today are dominated by fear and make decisions based on fear. Terrorist activity is designed to instill fear and turn people against each other. Some politicians incite fear to encourage trust in them. The news reports can cause fear when they bring the troubles of the world to our doorsteps. Relationships are sometimes broken by fear and lack of trust. Some people of one generation fear generations that follow.
Personal faith in Christ “drives out fear.” Believing people can be confident of God’s presence and protection. The confidence of eternal life encourages us when we are threatened or endangered. The Holy Spirit calms our fears. Prayer allows us to give our fears to God and experience His peace. Confident faith is a testimony to a fearful world that God is in control and He makes a difference in our lives. The first fear of humanity was driven by disobedience to God’s commands. Adam and Eve hid from God because they were afraid. Christ’s love and forgiveness atone for our sins and restore a confident relationship with God. While there are many things that incite fear, faith conquers fear in the lives of those who are followers of Jesus.
I am disappointed when a conversation with a fellow believer is dominated by fear. I am saddened when I hear a message that motivates fear over faith. My heart breaks as churches are divided by fear. Please join me in prayer that the faith of God’s people today will inspire courage and confidence and stand against fear. This will serve as a testimony to a world caught in fear that personal faith in Jesus changes lives and our outlook on life.
