2024 Missions Committee Trip – Kenya and Uganda
Jeremy Skaggs – Missions Committee Chair
Reverend Dr. Mutima Peter approached me at the 2023 annual gathering with a desire to address the theological famine among East African pastors. From this conversation, an international pastor’s conference was established for 2024 in Kenya and Uganda, with a focus on the Great Commission, church planting, business as mission, and family and marriage.
In May, a diverse team of 10 CCCC members from various regions ministered to approximately 570 pastors and lay leaders in Africa. The necessity of educating these pastors cannot be overstated, as without formal training, they risk having their pastoral rights revoked by the government.
Of this mission Craig Everett shared, “I found a hunger for truth that transcends culture and an insatiable desire for the deep things of God.” Regional Pastor, Paul McPheeters, reflected, “African pastors inspired us with their love for Jesus and passion for the gospel!” Area Pastor, Steve Burkett, joyfully recounted, “We rejoice in the transformative work the Lord is doing in that region!” Pastor Mitch Reed of upstate New York said, “I was challenged and encouraged by their commitment to take the gospel to their communities.”
A special thanks to Donna Burkett and Nancy McPheeters for hosting a women’s workshop, which proved to be more essential than anticipated. East African women expressed the importance of having a safe space to gather, share cultural concerns, and receive godly counsel without fear of reprisal.
Donna is preparing an article to be distributed soon, showcasing a poignant interview with Pastor Ann of Turkan, who ministers in an exceptionally impoverished and desolate region where many have never encountered the Good News.
This team has achieved a remarkable feat with profound implications. The East African pastors are now prepared to reclaim regions influenced by Islam for Christ through education and church planting.
The group acknowledges that none of this would have been possible without the dedication of Mutima Peter and his church, Bethel Christian Center of Maine. His unwavering diligence, tireless efforts, and passionate commitment to empowering the next generation of pastors and spreading the Christian faith across the continent of Africa set him apart as a truly exceptional leader.
Plans are now underway for a 2025 trip to train pastors in Tanzania and other East African nations. Begin praying now to discern how you will help spread the Gospel, encourage ministry leaders, and leave a lasting impact for God’s Kingdom. Will you answer the call?
